Tidally stripped halo stars from the Large Magellanic Cloud in the Galactic North

چکیده

ABSTRACT We examine whether the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is currently losing its stellar halo to Milky Way (MW) tides. present a live N-body model for ongoing MW–LMC interaction that predicts prominent stream of stars tidally stripped from progenitor LMC. use this define strategy search material in kinematic space. Of available tracers, we conclude samples RR Lyrae provide highest density tracers at present. Using sample with Gaia EDR3 astrometry, show LMC Southern Galactic hemisphere extends least out ?30? galaxy centre. In addition, several leading arm candidates are found Northern as far above disc plane b = +34? (at 68? LMC).

Contribution of the Large Magellanic Cloud to the Galactic Warp

Multi-scale interaction between the LMC, the Galactic halo, and the disk is examined with N-body simulations, and precise amplitudes of the Galactic warp excitation are obtained. The Galactic models are constructed most realistically to satisfy available observational constraints on the local circular velocity, the mass, surface density and thickness of the disk, the mass and size of the bulge,...

Discovery of Extreme Carbon Stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud

Using Spitzer IRAC and MIPS observations of the Large Magellanic Cloud, we have identified 13 objects that have extremely red mid-IR colors. Follow-up Spitzer IRS observations of seven of these sources reveal varying amounts of SiC and C2H2 absorption as well as the presence of a broad MgS feature in at least two cases, indicating that these are extreme carbon stars. Preliminary estimates find ...

J-type carbon stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud

A sample of 1497 carbon stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) has been observed in the red part of the spectrum with the 2dF facility on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. Of these, 156 have been identified as J-type (i.e. 13C-rich) carbon stars using a technique which provides a clear distinction between J stars and the normal N-type carbon stars that comprise the bulk of the sample, and yiel...

The ellipticities of Galactic and Large Magellanic Cloud globular clusters

The correlations between the ellipticity and the age and mass of LMC globular clusters are examined, and both are found to be weak. It is concluded that neither of these properties is mainly responsible for the observed differences in the LMC and Galactic globular cluster ellipticity distributions. Most importantly, age cannot be the primary factor in the LMCGalaxy ellipticity differences, even...
